NOTE: What's New
in 2008? We changed our consignment policy.
NO CONSIGNMENT FEE is one of the big changes.
What Sells Best?
What
sells best in
Laura's Closet are
items from the past 1-3 years that are classic or
current in style. We do not specialize in vintage
-- so polyester pants, acid wash jeans, stirrup
anything, old Lane Bryant labels like Kathryn Deene just
don't sell well. If it's not something you would
buy, then it probably will not sell here, either.
We are exclusively a plus-sized consignment shop.
We accept WOMEN'S clothing only in sizes 14-36 and XL
or 1X and up. Shoes must be size 8 or larger and
in excellent or like-new condition. ALL CLOTHING
MUST BE CURRENTLY IN SEASON, which means we do not
accept linen in fall/winter or wool in spring/summer,
etc.
We have 8 years of experience with what will or will
not sell in the store, so please trust us if we
reject items and say "No, thank you." Please don't take it personally . .
. we will try to be as kind as possible! We also
cannot sell stained clothing, so the best tip we have
for consignors is to hold up your clothing in the light
and really look at it before you bring it in. Check
all buttons and zippers.
At the very least, please freshen up your clothing by a tumble in the
dryer with dryer sheets! And if you own pets or are a smoker, please
ensure your clothing is clean and smoke-free . . .
you'll make much more money that way. (Special
Note: If you are a cat owner, please make an
effort to clean the clothing before bringing it in due
to Laura's severe allergy to cats -- or at the very
least, tell us you have cats so Laura's mom can process
the clothing.)
The last comment we have is that many people over-value
their clothing. The $250 leather coat you
purchased last year will never bring in a price tag like
that. We have extensive shopping experience and do
know how much clothing costs. Just like a car
depreciates once it's driven off the lot,
your clothing is worth far less the day you take it home
from the store. We know how to price the clothing
for the maximum profit for both of us . . . so again,
trust us. We have hundreds of very satisfied
consignors who have made thousands of dollars by
trusting us, being patient for profits and selecting
quality clothing to consign with us.
NOW
ACCEPTING SPRING AND TRANSITIONAL
Clothing in
sizes 26 and up is always in high demand. We do
not accept consignments on Saturdays unless an
APPOINTMENT has been made through Laura. If you
are not on the appointment book, then your clothing will
NOT be accepted on Saturdays -- no exceptions. ALL
CLOTHING MUST COME IN ON HANGERS OF SOME KIND. No
boxes, tubs, bags, etc. are accepted.
No appointment
is necessary (except for coats and Saturdays), but it is always a good idea to call the
store first. We do have periods when we are
currently "full" and temporarily stop accepting
consignments or we are transitioning between seasons
(like now). Remember to bring in your clothing on
wire or plastic hangers -- no more than 1-2 items per
hanger. Bags, boxes and tubs of CLOTHING will not
be accepted. (OK, it's fine to put your shoes and
purses in bags.)
Consignment Guidelines
|
This is an ABBREVIATED list.
Contact the
store for a complete consignment contract. |
- All clothing must be
in excellent condition and ready for sale.
No tears, stains, broken zippers, missing or
loose buttons/closures, moth holes, faded
colors, excessive wear, etc.
- Clothing must be
freshly dry-cleaned or laundered, pressed
and on hangers. Clothing smelling of
smoke or covered with pet hair will not be
accepted. If we must have clothing dry
cleaned or laundered for any reason, a
cleaning cost of $4 per item will be
deducted from your account.
- Clothing must
be currently in style or considered
"classic."
- We determine pricing
(usually based on designer, label, style,
condition) to ensure your items will be sold
at the most profitable prices for both
consignor and consignee.
- Consignors will
receive 40% of the sale price of the article
sold. After 30 days on the sale floor, the
items are reduced by 25%; after 60 days,
items are reduced by 50% of the original
selling price.
- The consignor is
responsible for checking consignment
records. Since we do not keep large sums of
cash in the store, payment will be made in
the form of a check or you may take store
credit if you are shopping. If the owner is
out-of-town for more than three consecutive
days, checks will be written when she
returns. We do not pay out December 22 -
January 5.
- Clothing will be
placed on sale for a period of 90 days.
- At the end of 90
days, unsold clothing may be reclaimed by
the consignor, left at the store to be sold
or you may choose to have the unsold
merchandise donated to a charity. WE DO NOT
DONATE ANY ITEMS UNLESS TOLD TO DO SO. You
are responsible for keeping track of your
consignment end date.
- There is no
consignment fee.
- Laura’s Closet
is not responsible for loss from theft, fire
or damage during consignment.
